A lift alarm needs a working communication path and an appropriate response arrangement. Changes to a building's telephone service can affect an existing lift autodialler. Include emergency communication in your maintenance or upgrade review rather than assuming that a new telephone connection will work with the installed alarm.

Check the complete communication path

Identify the alarm unit, connection type, power supply and receiving arrangements. An analogue line, digital voice connection and mobile communicator are not automatically interchangeable. Confirm compatibility before a telephone provider changes or disconnects the existing service.

Mobile communication and backup power

A GSM or 4G communicator needs suitable signal, a supported device, an active service and appropriate backup arrangements. Building construction and equipment position can affect reception. A replacement SIM alone does not establish that an alarm will function during a power failure.

Agree responsibilities and testing

Clarify who maintains the alarm, who pays for connectivity and who answers calls. Arrange tests with the responsible parties so that an alarm is not mistaken for a real emergency. Record the results and any follow-up work; do not assume an audible bell proves two-way communication works.

Information for an upgrade enquiry

Provide the site address, lift count, alarm make if known, current connection and any notice from your telephone provider. Tell us about reported alarm faults and planned building network changes. The required work depends on the installation and applicable requirements, including relevant emergency-alarm standards.

Common questions

Does every lift need the same telephone upgrade?

No. Existing equipment and communication arrangements vary. Check compatibility and backup power for the individual installation.

What should I do if the lift alarm is not working?

Notify the building's responsible person and arrange prompt competent attention. Do not leave a known alarm fault unreported or assume a personal mobile phone replaces the installed system.
